Charles “Boggy” Johnson

Charles “Boggy” Johnson was an English-born Shakespearean actor who came to the United States at age 19. About 1840, he joined a stock performing company in Philadelphia for a tour of the South.

Charles met and married a Chickasaw woman named Rebekah Courtney. When the Chickasaws were forced to move to Indian Territory, Charles and Rebekah journeyed with the tribe to their new home.

Charles and Rebekah had two children, Adelaide and Montford. Rebekah died when the children were young. As the Chickasaws are a matrilineal society, Charles left his children to be raised amongst their culture and returned east after her death.

“Montford: The Chickasaw Rancher” is now available to stream on Netflix.
